Animal of the month

Verreaux’s Eagle Owl

Formally known as the Giant Eagle Owl it is the largest owl in Africa with a wingspan of over 2 meters. Although nocturnal, they are well known for their light sleeping habits and are quick to defend themselves if attacked during the day. Primarily hunting during the early evenings, fully grown adults can take prey as large as scrub hares and guinea fowl and they are interestingly one of the few birds that prey on hedgehogs.
