Ernest has been involved in the property industry since he was 21. He and Gaye married in 1969 and until 1986 Gaye brought up the three children.

In 1986 Gaye and Ernest founded Century Retail Developments, a family run retail shopping centre and housing development company, with the intention to survive at least 100 years in South Africa for the generations to come. Ernest’s emphasis was always comprehensive management systems and Gaye’s on financial control.

Today Gaye is the Chief Financial Officer and Ernest the Chairman, although not involved in day to day activities they set the future path and ensure group viability.

Ernest and Gaye are both currently involved in mentoring new retail shopping centres and property development projects and the expansion of the Youth for Human rights program in South Africa and East African countries in order to contribute to a safe South Africa for their grandchildren.

Lisa began her career in Century Retail Developments in 1995, a property development company owned and run by the family. Starting in reception Lisa soon replaced herself and took on the Public relations and various community education programs in the tribal areas around Century’s Retail shopping centres. Following this Lisa took on Human resources as well as being Gaye’s personal assistant, a challenge in itself as this is where she learnt the skills of financial control.

Warwick began his career in the African bushveld as a field guide working for Conservation Corporation Africa, obviously where he learnt his great negotiating skills as there is nothing to test you like a lion in the bush. By 1994 he had met Lisa and moved to Johannesburg to become a Sales Executive for a paint company. In 1996 Warwick then moved over into the Sales and Letting post in Century Retail Developments.

In 2003 Lisa and Warwick decided to start a luxury Lodge and hotel brand and Tintswalo Safari Lodge was born, they spent 2 years constructing and establishing the lodge in the Manyeleti, Greater Kruger before moving back to Johannesburg to get involved with the expansion of the Tintswalo portfolio with Waterfall and to expand the base of Retail developments under Century once more.

Currently Warwick holds the post of CEO New Developments, ensuring the viability of new properties through correct site selection, design, and quality control and construction costs. Lisa holds the post of CEO ensuring the viable expanding company with increasing portfolio value and overall management of the organization ensuring it is running smoothly.

Michelle du Plessis
Michelle du Plessis
Michelle du Plessis studied at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg, graduating with a BA in Higher Education in 1987. After teaching for a year, Michelle traveled the world, working as a Chef, lecturer and au pair in various European countries. In 1991 she returned to Cape Town and ran a computer importing company for a year, then moved to Kimberly to set up a private school for disadvantaged communities. Michelle ran the Sol Plaatjie Education Centre as Principal for three years. In 1996, she joined the CCAfrica group and managed Phinda Forest Lodge until 1999.

In 2000 Michelle and her husband Rory Du Plessis launched & managed the new Ulusaba for Richard Branson, opened, set up and managed Kingfisher Lodge for Legend Lodges, Managed Kapama Lodge and opened Camp Jabulani.

In late 2003, Michelle joined Tintswalo Safari Lodge as the General Managers and moved up to Johannesburg mid 2006 taking the post of Operations Executive at the Tintswalo Lodges Head Office. In September 2007, Michelle was promoted to the Managing Director for the Tintswalo Lodges Group.

Vanessa Ryan studied at the University of Stellenbosch and graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Commerce Marketing Management degree. She then started her career in Durban in the marketing department for well known clothing brand – RoXy. She went on to establish her own company in events, marketing and graphic design and was later requested to work for MSA Geoservices, MSA Medical and Minestaff/Geostaff as their Marketing Manager. She started with Tintswalo in 2011 where she took on the position as Sales and Marketing Manager.

As Tintswalo’s Sales and Marketing Manager Vanessa ensures public relations, sales and promotional items are correctly used to better the brand.


Craig Smart

As a natural people’s person Craig Smart has been in the role of building relationships across various industries. He started his career in the motor industry with BMW SA, looking after corporates. Then worked for IOTA Financial Services, forging and building relationships with industries that needed asset based finance to move their capital equipment products.

For the past 10 years Craig has owned and run a professional photographic business, consisting of a photo lab in Fourways Crossing shopping centre, which was supported by a large following of professional photographers due to great relationships and the best quality products; a professional photographic studio specialising in a large range of photography, including having good relationships with corporates; and a framing business which supported both the Lab and Studio.

Craig’s passion, energy, love for travel, together with the desire for an exciting change has brought him to the Tintswalo family, where he is thriving in the role of Key Accounts.
